A family with fantastic style created a light-filled and airy living space for their young family in North Raleigh. They contacted Hollis & Jay to help them make their existing kitchen flow with the rest of their home. The cherry cabinets and dark granite made the room stand out against the lighter tones of the rest of the house and made the kitchen dark. The bones of their existing kitchen were solid – good cabinets, a layout that worked for their family and it was already open to the family’s main gathering area in the house. It didn’t need a full renovation. Intead, Hollis & Jay worked with the family to fix the things that bothered them most about the space and to help it flow into the style of the rest of the home. We removed cabinets, replacing them with reclaimed shelving to clean up sight lines and to add visual interest. We removed the under cabinet range hood and replaced it with an insert and custom hood for an updated look. Cabinets from one area of the kitchen were relocated and reused in another area and a reclaimed wood wine rack was added to create a more functional space for the family in an old desk area. A soffit holding canned lights over the island was removed and the canned lights were replaced with large glass pendants.
A fresh blue on the cabinets, a new backsplash and new lighting created a whole new space that flows seamlessly straight into the rest of the first floor. Their “new” kitchen fits the family’s lifestyle and flows right into the rest of their home now.
