Our client contacted Hollis & Jay to consult on an existing sunroom space on the back of their home. The sunroom had served for years as a playroom for their kids, but as they grew up, it had become a room for odds and ends and felt disconnected from the rest of the downstairs, despite an open doorway and windows from the family room looking in. The sunroom was heated and cooled but felt like a porch space on the back of the house instead of an extension of the downstairs living area.
Like many of today’s homeowners, our clients went into the meeting considering opening the room up to the adjacent family room. But once we talked through how the family lived and how they most envisioned using the room, it became clear that the right answer for them and for their family was to actually close the room up… to get rid of the windows from the family room looking out and reclaim that valuable wall space in the sunroom for a huge built in desk and bookcase.
Hollis & Jay worked with our clients to come up with a design for the built-ins using our design software that allows clients to see changes before construction. It was a combination of closed and open storage, filing cabinets and desk space. We handled permitting and construction and consulted on finishes and furniture for the space. An all in one solution for clients looking to create new living out of old spaces.
This project was finished just in time for 2020’s quarantine. With the whole family suddenly working, studying and living at home, the new space quickly became a coveted area of their home!
